What We Keep in Poverty

(2024 - 2025)

Poverty is more than a lack of money. It is an experience that profoundly influences daily life, personal relationships, and the sense of ‘being home’. This project showcases the stories of people dealing with poverty in various ways.

All individuals are depicted anonymously, not only for privacy reasons but also to protect them from the shame and stigmatization that poverty still often brings with it. Beauvois shows a number of aspects of poverty through various themes. They based their work on stories they heard at De Vince, the thrift store of de Vincentius vereniging Breda and surroundings. Additionally, Beauvois has had a fascination with the traces people leave behind and the story behind them, since their youth. These photos are about people, even though there are few people in the picture. It is also about color, composition, atmosphere, and images that speak louder than words.

Hoardingshame (Custom selection)

Hoardingshame (Verzamelschaamte) follows someone who collects and refurbishes items due to long-term poverty in order to survive. When fear of judgment caused them to withdraw from the photo project, that very absence became part of the story. The photos, edited with paint to preserve anonymity, show how survival can become loaded with feelings of shame. This project is not only about what people collect, but also about what they keep hidden. With a camera given to her, she also captured close-up images of her personal belongings herself.

‘The Green Jesus’

The man in this photograph calls himself “The Green Jesus.” He is homeless, but lives in deep connection with nature, which he considers his true home, reading leaves as signs and messages. In this portrait, which he directed himself, he presents who he is in the way that feels most comfortable and authentic to him.
