Filing rocks under my fingernails
(2025 - ongoing)
Exhibition: 02/07/2026 - 05/07/2026 NOWSHOW St Joost School of Art & Design, Breda.
Where my ancestors once had a literal grip on the earth, I feel that same ground slipping away like sand between my fingers.
I returned to the landscapes of my ancestors in the Ardennes, tracing a lineage of stonemasons dating back to the early 1800s. Their labor with stone gave them a literal grip on the land, defining their life through a physical connection with the earth. Today, I feel my bond with nature is lost. While revisiting these sites I encountered darkness, mystery, and existential disorientation within myself: The world around us is changing rapidly, and it feels as though the earth is actively flinging me around rather than offering a connection.
This disorientation mirrors solastalgia: the homesickness experienced when your environment degrades around you, leaving you feeling estranged in your own home. To confront this feeling, I transform my images into a vibrant, mythical space, which are my interpretation of what a true connection to the land might feel like.
This work is my own way of gathering the debris, filing rocks under my fingernails as I try to hold onto what remains.
